JENNIFER O’MALLEY
Senior Research Specialist
Department of Otolaryngology
Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) |
Jennifer received her BA from Mount Holyoke College in 1989. Within a few weeks, she was employed as a research technician at the MEEI.
Jennifer worked for 7 years in the Electron Microscopy Laboratory preparing, photographing, and analyzing inner ear specimens with a transmission electron microscope. She was able to participate in the field of hearing research from the planning of experiments through publication. She was part of a very innovative team who worked out the first ever protocol for histological sectioning of human temporal bones with cochlear implants in situ.
Subsequent to this, Jennifer was employed as a research consultant with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where she was able to use my skills to investigate the inner ear anatomy of marine mammals.
She returned to the MEEI in 2005 as a research specialist working on multiple projects in the Otopathology Laboratory including proteomics of the inner ear, immunohistochemistry of the cochlea, and radiologic and histopathological correlates of disease in the human temporal bone.
Her experience with hearing research spans some 17 years and her interest continues to grow. Working in the field of histology of the inner ear has satisfied her analytical and my artistic interests.
